Following the sad loss of lead guitarist Nick Powell and drummer Dave Rochelle in 2023, bassist/vocalist Bo Benham and rhythm guitarist/vocalist Steve McNerney decided it was time to reconnect. After a few relaxed catch-ups over spaghetti Bolognese and some great vintage red wine, they began casually bouncing around some musical ideas for fun at first. But soon enough, those sessions sparked a creative flow, and before they knew it, a collection of new songs had taken shape. A new album wasn’t originally on the cards, it just happened organically! Michele Bettencourt is a singer/songwriter who found her own voice in 2018. She grew up as an only child in a lower middle-class household in northern California. Michele’s love of music was fostered by her mother who kept their home filled with sounds of Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Crosby Stills and Nash, Carol King and others whose music echoed with resonant the defiance against the Vietnam War and racial atrocities that shook America in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. Earlier in her music journey Michele joined forces with Hendrik Helmer, an accomplished guitarist in New York City and her dreams of becoming a writer re-emerged. With the help of exceptional musicians that included Mike Visceglia and Tommy Mandel, they recorded New Normal, an album that, while never marketed or distributed, is as timely now as it was then. Her lyrics and their melodies speak honestly about the cruelty of politics and the shame of failure and even the grace of redemption. Her upcoming album, Vampire Time, features guest performances by Carmine Rojas, Conrad Korsch, Steve Ferrone, Shawn Pelton, Russ McKinnon, Andrew Synowiec and many notable others. Kerry Brown who runs the legendary Licorice Pizza is producer and executive in charge and is releasing the album through his Licorice Pizza record label. With the release of her debut single “Everybody Loves A Circus” (Licorice Pizza) we can honestly say that it’s Michele Bettencourt’s time to be heard and she has a lot to say. Steve Sloan grew up in Nebraska, and with his guitar, worked his way through college, the Sorbonne University in Paris, France, and law school (Juris Doctor ’67). Upon graduation he formed a singing duo with Gail Randall (Miss Omaha 1966) and “Steve & Gail” performed at folk houses and night clubs across America. In 1969 they joined The New Christy Minstrels, one of the country’s most popular folk-singing groups with 14 Gold Records.
Over the past 35 years, Steve enjoyed a successful career in real estate investment and brokerage. For 15 years he was a leader of a humanitarian organization which helped save over one million Jews, Baptists, and Jehovah’s Witnesses from persecution in the Soviet Union. Steve and Michi, his wife of 51 years and their two children live in Marin County, California.
Steve plays all the instruments, except a mandolin and steel/bass guitar in this CD album of 14 songs, including guitar (Martin D-35 dreadnought), harmonica, drums, tambourine, vocal lead and harmonies, rhythm stix, cymbals, whistling and gazatchka. Through the magic of multi-track recording, these elegantly simple yet powerful all acoustic instruments boldly back Steve’s spirited interpretations, resulting in beautiful, stirring music.
